We started Crockett and Hayrapetyan in 2007, as a joint concern between Mike Crockett and Vahan Hayrapetyan. An Englishman and an Armenian from Karabakh. Our aim was to make very good walnut gunstock blanks.
We have both put a lot of time and money into building up our small workshop in Stepanakert, the capital of Karabakh, and in learning the business of producing walnut blanks for gunstocks. Where to buy the best walnut trees, how to cut them and dry them to achieve the best. We both have a background in wood but it hashas been a steep learning curve to know how to make good walnut gunstock blanks.
We take immense trouble to cut the logs for straight side grain, at the same time as searching for the most beauty in the hand of the stock, whether rifle or shotgun. There is a conflict. Sometimes one can cut an eye wateringly beautiful piece of wood, with no strength in the wrist at all. We try to resist doing so. Strength and line first, beauty a close second. A beautiful walnut blanks with strength in the wrist.
